SUVA – A woman’s love for her grandson has landed her in trouble with the law. The 67-year-old woman is in police custody for allegedly trying to pass a roll of what is believed to be marijuana to her grandson at Suva Prison on Saturday when she was caught.
Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the woman had gone to visit her grandson when she was searched and found with the roll of dried leaves. The case is one of the latest drug busts that have been reported in the country by police in recent days.
And it has also revealed that age is no barrier as far as drug-related offences being recorded in the country are concerned.
Insp Sokomuri said police had noticed that the number of drug cases reported recently were in all parts of the country and not only in the Western and Central divisions.
“There was also a case in Levuka where police officers arrested a man who was found with 17 sachets of dried leaves,” he said.
He said other recent incidents were from Navosa where police officers were conducting their drug operations in the mountainous terrain.
“We need the help of the public in fighting such crimes in Fiji. “We had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the iTaukei Affairs Board so that provincial councils can also assist us,” he said.
Insp Sokomuri said police were trying to find people cultivating marijuana and those selling the illegal drug. He reiterated that anyone caught cultivating or dealing in marijuana would be severely dealt with by the law.
Last week, police raided a farm in the Navosa highlands and uprooted 290 fully matured marijuana plants, which were reportedly planted by youths who had sought a chief’s approval to do so.
