WASHINGTON – Two top aides to Nikki Haley, the American ambassador to the UN, have quit their posts, at a time of rising tensions between the US and North Korea.

Haley’s chief of staff Steven Groves and her communications director Jonathan Wachtel resigned — departures which have come ahead of Haley’s trip to Vienna to review Iran’s nuclear activities with the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency, Bloomberg reported.

Journalist Laura Rozen first broke the news on Twitter, which was then retweeted by NBC’s Evan Rosenfeld. Haley responded to the latter’s post, tweeting that both were leaving due to family concerns.

“Thanks for your concern. Both Jonathan & Steve have recently encountered family concerns. They will always be a part of the team & dear friends,” she wrote.

Groves joined Haley’s team from conservative think tank Heritage Foundation and according to Politico, was known to be sceptical of international institutions and multilateral agreements. Wachtel had joined Haley from Fox News, where he had covered the United Nations.
