LOS ANGELES – Mahesh and Seema Kumar from Sunnyvale, Calif., were in for a surprise when they found out that their newborn child, Meghana Sahara Kumar, was born 11/11/11, a palindrome that occurs once every century.

“When I heard my daughter’s first cry, I had tears of joy. And it’s just an overwhelming, amazing feeling. I just wanted her to be a healthy baby,” Seema Kumar told India-West.

Meghana Sahara Kumar entered the world at 8:08 a.m., weighing seven pounds and two ounces at the El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, Calif. The baby was in the ICU for a couple of days for routine checkups, but remains healthy.

The couple received various e-mails and congratulatory messages from the community regarding the birth of their daughter. “We got a lot of e-mails from folks because the day is so unique. The fact that my daughter was born at 8:08 a.m. is quite amazing, too,” said Mahesh Kumar.

“A lot of folks believe she is a lucky baby to be born on that date. Some folks even told us to buy lottery tickets,” he jested.

For the Kumars, the date wasn’t just a coincidence. They had an inkling that their daughter might be born on Nov. 11, despite predictions from doctors regarding an earlier due date. “We were hoping she would be born on that date because it came to the point where I was far along in the pregnancy,” said Seema Kumar.

“We were really happy and thrilled that she made it on that date,” she added.

The Kumars have two other children, 4-year-old Akash, and 2-year-old Avani. The Indian American couple named their children after the elements, sky and earth. After contemplating several names, Meghana seemed to be the perfect culmination. For the Kumars, the name Meghana symbolizes clouds and the joining of the sky and the earth.

Seema Kumar believes that 11/11/11 is a symbol of good luck and positive change. “For me, I think it definitely symbolizes luck. It’s a lucky day and something that will happen only once in a century. It’s certainly special to have my daughter born on that day,” she told India-West.

Seema Kumar is not alone in believing the positive cosmic vibrations of 11/11/11.

Plenty of people throughout the world planned their wedding dates accordingly on 11/11/11, while a handful of others anxiously set their alarm clocks at 11:11 to “wish upon a star” during the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon.
