Indo-Canadian Librarian Sarwan Randhawa Also Recognized!
LANGLEY – Muriel Arnason Library was awarded the prestigious 2011 Langley International Festival Cultural Diversity Award for its Innovative projects at the 2nd Annual Multicultural Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony organized by Langley International Festival Society at Sunrise Banquet & Conference Centre, Surrey.
Muriel Arnason Library is one of six libraries in the Langley Township area, and one of 24 libraries belonging to the Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL). The library plays a leadership role in promoting diversity in the community. The library has material and welcome brochures in several languages that creates a welcome environment for everyone. The library has a very friendly and diverse staff, and provides library services and programs to all ages from children to seniors, to all cultures from native to new immigrants, from people with special needs to healthy and wealthy as well.
The library celebrates the month of March as a world cultures month with a number of multicultural activities including multicultural and multi-lingual displays, multicultural storytimes, crafts, contests and quizzes, etc. Every year, the library organizes several multicultural events very successfully including Diwali, Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year), and Christmas that give people a chance to celebrate their cultures; and has presented a number of other programs such as Canada Multiculturalism Day, Aboriginal Day, Women’s International Day, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, United Nations Human Rights Day, and many more. It also supports, promotes, and participates in several multicultural community events including Langley’s International Festival, Langley Arts Alive, Campbell Valley Regional park event, and Langley’s Canada Days.
For its outstanding services to the community, the library has won the Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Award; and in 2011, its Community Librarian Dr. Sarwan Singh Randhawa was awarded the 2010 Ambassador of Diversity Award for his exceptional multicultural services to the community.
