NEW DELHI – The rural villages of India may lack good roads, power, drinking water and sanitation but surprisingly the leaders in the villages have fancy, expensive cars to flaunt. Recently the leaders of some of those villages in Maharashtra showed up with status symbol cars at a convention organized in Pune by the NCP, Shard Pawar’s party, reported Mala Das for NDTV.

Amongst those who addressed the local leaders were senior NCP politicians including party chief Sharad Pawar. In the gathering, they imparted tips on good governance and ways to further spread the party’s rural base.

Home Minister RR Patil along with other senior leaders, while addressing the village leaders, said that the image of the party depended on that of the local leader. Patil called on members of the gram panchayat to work as a powerful bond between the electorate and the leaders.

While Patil was speaking at the stadium hall in Pune, the huge parking lot outside the venue was fast filling up with posh cars. Village leaders had in stark contrast arrived in expensive cars for the meeting. Approximately over 200 vehicles in the parking area, at least 60 percent were SUVs and others were high-end, luxury cars like Audi, BMW, Pajero and Mercedes.
