NEW DELHI – Sanjay Dutt’s supporters are doing all they can to save him from spending the next three years in jail, and actor Ajay Devgn is one of them. The Supreme Court has sentenced Dutt to five years of imprisonment (he has already served 18 months of this sentence) after upholding his conviction for illegally possessing weapons which were brought to India for the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

“He’s my brother. It’s very upsetting. He has suffered enough for whatever he has done. As family members, we beg and request for mercy and can’t do anything more than that. He’s not harming the society anymore. He’s a good citizen right now. He has made a mistake in his life and he has gone through a trial for 20 years. He has suffered for 18 months I would say,” says Devgn, 43.

Ajay-SanjayHowever, the actor understands that law is above everything else. “As a brother and a family member, you are also blind to a lot of things. You can understand that if somebody from your family is going through something like that, you will not try to debate a logic. You might just go down on your knees and say, ‘please let him go’. If somebody sits down and has a legal debate with me, I don’t want to get into that because I know law is law,” he explains.

Devgn also supports Salman Khan, who is facing trial for the 2002 hit-and-run case. “I don’t know much about the developments. Let’s see what happens. We are keeping our fingers crossed. Salman is also a friend of mine, in fact more than a friend. If anything is in my hands, I’m all support for him,” the actor says. so much support!

Others in Bollywood who have stood up for Sanjay Dutt include Vidya Balan, Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan, Rajkumar Hirani, Sujoy Ghosh and Apoorva Lakhia. Justice (retired) Markandey Katju has appealed to Maharashtra governor K sankaranarayanan to pardon Dutt. Jaya Bachchan and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee have also  shown solidarity.
