The alleged killers of Indo-Canadian teen Maple Batalia,who was shot to death in Surrey in 2011, have been orderedto stand trial for her brutal killing. SURREY – The alleged killers ofIndo-Canadian teen MapleBatalia, who was shot to deathin Surrey in 2011, have beenordered to stand trial for herbrutal killing.Batalia’s ex-boyfriend Gurjinder(Gary) Dhaliwal and co-accusedGursimar Sing Bedi was orderedto stand trial after a preliminaryhearing of the evidence inSurrey Provincial Court, whichended Monday.There is a publication ban onevidence presented at preliminaryhearings.Batalia was a 19-year-old studentattending SFU Surrey when shewas gunned down Sept. 28, 2011in the parkade outside the universityin Central City, reportedSurrey Leader.The aspiring model and actresswas studying late at night withfriends and left the building atabout 1 a.m. when she was shotmultiple times. She died later inhospital. Dhaliwal and Bediwere charged more than a yearlater, in December 2012.While Dhaliwal faces one firstdegreemurder charge, Bedi willbe tried for manslaughter with afirearm and accessory after thefact. Dhaliwal has been in custodysince his arrest, while Bedihas been free on bail since earlylast year. Their case will nowproceed to B.C. Supreme Courtin New Westminster. The nextcourt date is April 17.
