Dysfunctional Family Tries To Make The Best Of What They Have!

By Alan Samuel

Appreciate your heritage.  That’s what a dysfunctional family tries it’s best to do in Wish I Was Here, currently unravelling at the Park Theatre.

Core values are at the heart of this 2 hour movie.  Zach  Braff plays  Aidan Bloom, a 35 year old who is still trying to find his true path.  Unlike his successful dad the man does his best to make ends meet but as a fledgling L.A. actor he normally comes out second best, much to the disappointment of his elders. How fortunate he is that  his sexy wife Sara is employed and smart and purposefully portrayed by Kate Hudson

Judaism is front and centre in this whimsical drama as the pair’s two kids try to cope with religious school. That leaves an obscure offbeat brother unaccounted for played in great loser mode by Josh Gad.

As if there is not enough malfunction in  This family the patriarch seems to be on his last legs . Mandy Patinkin is good as the ailing  dad in an otherwise sombre reflection on coming to terms with death – and living. Some side issues involving trouble at the work place surface but otherwise Wish I Was Here is a pretty bleak story saved partially by the easy-going work of the cast who must wrestle with some pretty tough problems.
