AMRITSAR – Two lovers hailing from Batala committed suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling at their rented accommodation in the Mustafabad area here late last night.
The girl was 14-year-old, while the man was married and had a child. They were identified as Prabhjit Kaur and Gurwinder Singh (alias Dhaggar). Gurwinder was in his early twenties. Both of them were residents of Jadhpur village under the Rangar Nangal police station. They had come to Amritsar only a couple of days ago.
Investigating Officer Sarabjit Singh said the incident came to light when caretaker Munshi came to their room on the first floor for checking the electricity meter. He knocked at the door, but there was no response. He peeped through a window and saw the couple hanging. He raised the alarm and called a local leader who informed the police.
Munshi said the couple had rented that room through migrant labourer Shiv Kumar (alias Shiv Bahadur) a couple of days ago.
