Five Criminals Get Jail For Harassing, Pushing Girl To Suicide

The victim, who had set herself on fire on March 5, 2013, in Faridkot after she was repeatedly molested and stalked by five youths, succumbed to her burn injuries on March 21.

FARIDKOT – The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Faridkot, awarded five-year rigorous imprisonment to five persons for harassing, threatening to kidnap and forcing a young girl to commit suicide.

The victim, who had set herself on fire on March 5, 2013, at Ambedkar Nagar in Faridkot after she was repeatedly molested and stalked by five youths, succumbed to her burn injuries on March 21. With 90 per cent burn injuries, the girl kept struggling for life at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot, for over two weeks.

Earlier, the police had arrested four persons on the charges of molestation. Besides the father of the victim lodging a complaint with the police against the accused on March 5, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Faridkot, had also recorded the dying declaration of the victim.

Earlier, the police had registered a criminal case under Section 354, 506 of the IPC (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty and criminal intimidation) against five persons, but after her death, abetment to suicide charge was also added.

As per the FIR, the victim was being harassed and threatened by the accused, who lived in her neighbourhood. The parents of the girl had alleged that the girl was too scared to even step out of her house due to constant harassment as she was stalked by the accused with taunts and threats. The girl stopped going to school as the accused started intercepting her on the way to school.
