It is something that you’ve been doing ever since you can remember. Brushing your teeth is a daily habit that most people pay little attention to.

But experts say that they have seen an increasing number of people coming in with various dental problems all thanks to not brushing their teeth correctly.

– One of the biggest mistakes that people make is to use the wrong toothbrush. There are tons of companies out there who offer everything from soft, medium and hard bristles to ‘curved’ brushes and ones with extra ‘reach’. With so much variety, it isn’t surprising that people go wrong. While hard bristles will be more vigorous while cleaning your teeth and removing food particles, they can also wreak havoc on your gums over time. Even tooth enamel can get eroded if used continuously. It is best to go for soft or, at the most, medium bristles. Such toothbrush will work just as well at removing leftover food from your mouth.

– How often do you change your toothbrush? If the answer is every six months, then you’re setting yourself up for dental trouble. A toothbrush has to preferably be replaced every eight to 10 weeks. In case you notice your bristles losing shape and getting wonky, then it is time to replace the brush.

– The next time you brush your teeth, pay attention to your technique. Is it in a straight line, back and forth? That is an incorrect technique. The right (and effective) way to brush is to use circular movements. By brushing straight, you wear off your enamel, which, over time, will cause extreme tooth sensitivity every time you eat something cold or sweet. Use round movements when you brush instead and brush for at least a minute and a half for maximum effect.

– While the several advertisements to whiten your teeth instantly will be very tempting, curb your urge to use whitening toothpastes everyday. Such toothpastes almost offer little cavity protection, which is one of the most important attributes in a toothpaste. – Pay attention to the toothpaste quantity on your toothbrush. There is no need to slather on from root to tip. A small amount will be just as effective.

– Don’t forget to brush your tongue as well while brushing your teeth. The tongue is an oft neglected area and can easily cause decay, not to mention bad breath and other dental woes.

– Flossing is another important aspect of brushing. Floss at least thrice a week and if you like using mouthwashes, stick to ones that don’t have alcohol content.
