CHANDIGARH – Perturbed over the desecration incidents in the state, managements of hundreds of gurdwaras, temples and other religious places are going in for a massive exercise involving installation of thousands of CCTV cameras to keep an eye on religious premises and to ward off any untoward incidents.

“We are being bombarded with queries from religious places regarding CCTV installation. We have received as many as 178 such queries during the past two days. We had to augment our existing teams to handle the sudden rush for CCTV camera installation ahead of the festive season,” said Munish Nagpal, owner of Jalandhar-based IT firm Impel Infosys.

Work is on for installation of CCTV cameras in over 480 gurdwaras controlled by the SGPC in Punjab. “Cameras in SGPC gurdwaras are being installed as a precautionary measure. We have asked managements of other ‘needy’ gurdwaras to send applications for installation of CCTV cameras to the SGPC,” said SGPC chief Avtar Singh. He said there was no proposal to install CCTV cameras in SGPC-controlled gurdwaras in other states.
