SURREY – Premier Christy Clark and Conservative leader Rona Ambrose  issued statements on the death of Dr. Raghbir Bains, who died in India last week

“It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr. Raghbir Bains,” wrote Clark in a press release

“Born in India, he later made British Columbia his home – and has left a lasting legacy in two of the world’s great countries.

“A true renaissance man, it’s difficult to overstate the scope of Dr. Bains’ accomplishments. A prolific writer, activist, scholar, and philanthropist, he was a titan in fields as different as Sikh history, remote learning, and helping those coping with drug addiction or HIV-AIDS.

“He showed that great things are possible – even for the son of a humble peasant – and made a difference in hundreds of thousands of lives.

“He will be mourned literally around the world. My thoughts are with his family.”

Ambrose, the Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, expressed profound sadness on Bains’ passing.

“It is with profound sadness that the Conservative Caucus and the Conservative Party of Canada express our condolences to Sikhs in Canada and around the world at the passing of the Scholar and inspirational leader Dr. Raghbir Singh Bains.

“Dr. Bains was born in the Hohiarpur region of India and was first educated as a Lawyer in India previously to immigrating to Canada in 1990. Dr. Bains achieved a Ph.D in 2002 in World Religions and Cultures. He used his degree to work tirelessly as an educator and community activist for various groups promoting cultural understanding and mutual respect for the Indo-Canadian communities. Furthermore, Dr. Bains organized dozens of health conferences and seminars to combat drug use and to promote awareness of HIV and AIDS.

“Dr. Bains commitment to bettering the lives of others has been recognized in Canada and on the international stage. In 2014, he received the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. In 2015, he received the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award (PMVA) and received the award from then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper at a special ceremony.

“As we mourn Dr. Bains’ passing, we express our gratitude for his great accomplishments. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those whose lives were touched by this inspirational leader.”
