CHANDIGARH – The Punjab Police investigation into the January 17 murder of Amit Sharma, a district-level leader of a rightwing Hindu organisation, has pointed out certain similarities of the case with the unsolved murder case of extremist RSS leader Brig Jagdish Gagneja.

The police believe that the two murders and another of a Shiv Sena leader, besides attack on two others could be the handiwork of one module.

In both cases, two motorcycle-borne youths had fired the shots. The forensic examination of bullets recovered from Amit Sharma’s body has revealed that one of the two weapons used was a .32 pistol.

Three bullets recovered the RSS leader’s body were also shot from a .32 pistol. A used cartridge of a 9 mm pistol was also found from near Amit’s body. A 9 mm pistol was also used in the murder of Shiv Sena (mazdoor wing) leader Durga Gupta in Khanna on April 24 last year.

The state government has transferred the Gagneja case to the CBI, but the Punjab Police are continuing their probe as well. “The similarity between the weapons used points out that the crime could be the handiwork of a same group of criminals or a terror module,” an officer said.
