Popular Punjabi Radio Host Manjit Virdi Passes Away

OBITUARY – Manjit Virdi

Manjit Virdi was a regular radio broadcaster when in the late 1970s and certainly was a major source of entertainment in a new environment, wrote local showman Kamal Sharma on Facebook in announcing Virdi’s passing this week.

“Solving bollywood quizzes on his radio show was lot of fun and Virdi’s hilarious style of delivery made him a standout amongst other radio broadcasters . Canada was a land of opportunities and he sure became a regular source of entertainment for many new immigrants making new home here,” Sharma wrote.

In-spite of any previous broadcasting experience his command of Punjabi language gelled well and he entertained for many decades before fading away after the arrival of South Asian 24 hours radio stations.

Virdi surely was a pillar of broadcasting field and inspired many. He  may be gone but he’ll always be acknowledged as a pioneer in the South Asian broadcasting field.

Manjit Virdi’s funeral  is scheduled for Sunday, December 10 at 3 pm at Five Rivers Funeral Home in Delta. Bhog and final rights and prayers will be held at York Centre Gurdwara following the funeral
