TORONTO – An Indo-Canadian trucker is facing charges after a Canada Border Services Agency detector dog sniffed out a major load of suspected cocaine in a tractor trailer at the Detroit-Windsor border.

The seizure — totaling 96.7 kilograms of suspected cocaine — happened July 30 at the Ambassador Bridge, reported the Windsor Star newspaper.

Gurinder Singh, 27, of LaSalle, Que., has been charged with importation in violation of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking.

According to the CBSA, the transport truck was attempting to enter Canada when it was referred to secondary examination.

With the help of a canine unit, CBSA officers discovered the suspected cocaine packaged in 80 bricks, hidden in the commercial load of the tractor-trailer.

The driver was arrested and transferred to the custody of Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

CBSA said their investigation continues as bail hearing at the Superior Court of Justice in Windsor was pending for Singh.

Joe McMahon, CBSA’s district director for the Southern Ontario Region, said the seizure and arrest demonstrate the agency’s ongoing commitment to stop the smuggling of narcotics into the community.

The July 30 interception represents the most significant seizure of contraband at the Ambassador Bridge this year since the seizure of 74.2 kilograms of suspected cocaine from a transport truck on Feb. 19.

Anyone with information about suspicious cross-border activity is encouraged to call the CBSA’s Border Watch Line at 1-888-502-9060.
