BURNABY – British Columbia’s Muslim community continues the mourn the six people were killed on January 29th at the Islamic Cultural Centre mosque in the Sainte-Foy neighborhood of Quebec City. Nineteen others were injured in the attack, including two who are still in critical condition.

In the wake of these attacks, the reaction from Canadians at-large has been overwhelmingly supportive for Muslim communities. This includes letters, cards and flowers left at Mosques, messages of support and solidarity sent through social media and email, support from elected officals and community groups, and other faith groups and faith leaders including representatives from Christian, Jewish, Sikh and Hindu communities who have given their support to Canada’s Muslims.

As a result, Burnaby’s Al-Salaam Mosque is hosting an evening of public appreciation to those countless numbers of Canadians who have mourned alongside Canadian Muslims, and given their sympathy and support during a very difficult time. This includes the brave first res-ponders, and RCMP, including Burnaby’s own detachment, who have increased patrol around Mosques in the wake of this threat to ensure community safety.

Speakers will include a representative from Burnaby City Hall, Imam Yahya Momla, and BC Muslim Association President Daud Ismail.

The Al-Salaam Mosque is managed by the BC Muslim Association’s Burnaby-New Westminster-Tri-Cities Branch. The B.C. Muslim Association (BCMA) is a non-profit organization incorporated under the Societies Act on November 17, 1966. It is currently the largest Muslim organization in the province representing 75,000 to 80,000 Sunni Muslims. The Muslims in British Columbia are experiencing exponential growth, from a population of 10,000 in 1980 to 75,000+ today.
