High Profile Candidate Jas Cheema Finishes 4th Out Of Four Candidates!

By R. Paul Dhillon

SURREY – Small business owner Avtar Bains won the hotly contested Surrey-Tynehead NDP nomination beating out neophyte wanna-be politicians Narima Dela Cruz, Jas Cheema and Dhama Sahota.

Bains, who is not much known, will be hoping the upswing in NDP support helps him wrestle the seat that has been won numerous times by the largely in-effective BC Liberal Dave Hayer, who is hoping to make a move to the greener and much more lucrative pastures of the federal Conservatives but will have to explain his extremely high travel costs before he seeks the federal nomination.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Avtar in Surrey-Tynehead,” said BCNDP leader Adrian Dix. “He has already proven his commitment to this community and will be an asset in making life better for British Columbians.”

Bains emigrated to the Surrey region in 1972 as a child. He has lived there with his wife and children ever since.

He says he is passionate about community involvement, working with non-profits and is part of the Surrey Memorial Pediatric Oncology Funding Committee. He owns and operates a restaurant in Surrey.

“This nomination is a great privilege for me,” says Bains. “Adrian and the BCNDP can bring the change British Columbia needs and I can’t wait to be part of it.”

Bains was formally nominated as the BCNDP candidate at an all candidate meeting on February 9th in Surrey.

The riding became vacant for another NDP nomination after formerly nominated candidate Raj Hundal stepped down suddenly and then disappeared from the local political landscape, after he had assumed Gurmant Grewal level activity in sending out press releases and that too without being elected.

Bains is probably hoping that the BC Liberals don’t persuade Langley RCMP inspector Amrik Virk to become their candidate in the riding as that may mean an uphill battle to win the riding for the ND
