Global Sikh Council Invites Pope For 550th Gurpurab

CHANDIGARH – The Global Sikh Council has invited the Pope to attend the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak in India. The council met Bishop Miguel Ayuso Guixot, president of the Pontificial Council for Inter-religious Dialogue, and Monsignor Santiago Michael, Staff Responsible for relations with Sikhs, Pontificial Council for Interreligious Dialogue in Geneva recently to invite the Pope.

The council has also proposed to hold a meeting on the sidelines at the UN assembly, when it meets in October this year, and request them to declare this year as the “Year of Universal Brotherhood” to commemorate the 550th Gurpurb.

At the annual general meeting of the council, after a wide range of discussions on issues concerning Sikhs globally, it was decided that special emphasis would be given to involve youth in spreading the philosophy of Guru Nanak, concentrating on universal brotherhood, women empowerment and ecology.
