Vancouver: Sikh Seva continues to help the hungry and those in need in the poorest neighborhood of Vancouver – the East End.

The service, started by the late Amar S. Sandhu, faced some hurdles after he passed away recently.  However, the rest of the members decided to fill the void and continue with the good work that has been ongoing for four years.

“This is what Amar would have wanted and he would be very proud that the Guru’s work is being done in his absence and will continue to be done.  He worked hard to get the service to this stage and with the Guru’s grace and blessing it will continue”.

Mount Pleasant MLA Melanie Mark also praised the group last week.  She paid a special visit at the food service to personally meet and thank the volunteers.

“My heart is so warm in knowing that there are still people in the community that are paying and volunteering their time and feeding the homeless and just giving so much generosity.  I lift my hands to your organization”.

In remembering Amar she gave her condolences and told the volunteers that she was “very sorry that he lost his life but he had a vision and he carried it forward in making sure that everyone in our backyard is taken care of.  Again, I put my hands out to your service”.

Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen has been serving food for nearly seven years at the same location every Sunday.  Cooking is done in New West at the Sukh Sagar Gurdwara.  Sikh Seva prepares in Vancouver at the Guru Amar Das Niwas building at Ross Gurdwara and serves every second Saturday.

“With the community’s support and Guru’s blessing we are hoping to extend this service to every Saturday in the near future.  This way both days on the weekend will be covered”.

The next food service will be on July 30 and for information and volunteering contact Niki Chohan 604-338-0777 or Tirath Sandhu 604-715-4699.
