High Achiever Gunpreet Kaur Awarded MD Degree From UBC

Gunpreet Kaur, who is the daughter of Dr. Kala Singh was recently awarded MD degree by University of British Columbia and will start her Residency in Psychiatry from UBC on July 1st.

VANCOUVER – Media is full of negative news about youth ranging from gang violence to secret dating by girls. Everyone has been talking about lack of positive role models in the community. Media does bring to the attention of their readers whenever there are positive role models who have excelled in academics or sports.

Gunpreet Kaur, who is the daughter of Dr. Kala Singh, is one such role model for our young generation who has excelled academically and in volunteer service. She was recently awarded MD degree by University of British Columbia and will start her Residency in Psychiatry from UBC on July 1st.

D Gunpreet Kaur graduated from John Oliver High School and was  awarded Governor General’s Academic Medal. This medal was awarded to her for her excellent academic record in Grade 11, 12 and in Provincial exams getting 93.4% marks. She also won prestigious Gordon M Shrum scholarship of $24,000 to pursue post secondary education in sciences in Simon Fraser University. She was honoured with Siropa by President of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee S. Prahlad Singh Chandok at a ceremony held in the conference room of DSGMC Head Offices at Rakabganj Gurdwara in Delhi, was given Siropa  by Gurudwara Khalsa Darbar Vancouver.

Gunpreet immigrated to Canada in 1999 with her parents and was admitted in John Oliver School in grade 8. She received Science award for highest marks in grade 8. In grade 9 she again received Science award and Fine Arts (food & nutrition) award for highest marks. In grade 10 she again received Science award, Applied Science (sewing) award, Social Studies award for highest marks and Scholarship award for maintaining highest G.P.A. In grade 11 she again received Scholarship award for maintaining highest G.P.A., Social studies award and Chemistry award for highest marks.

Gunpreet is not only excellent in studies but in extra curricular activities in the school also. She has been assisting students in math questions and homework. She has been President and founder of JO’s Walk of Fame, Co-founder of Impact, Co-chairperson of Counter Attack Club, Leader of Link Crew, Writer of School Newspaper, Member of Lost & Found Club, Official’s Club and Buddy Club. In the community she volunteered in Vancouver General Hospital, Children’s Festival, Youth Week Art Show, Sunset Community Center and Day Cares.

Where Gunpreet is excellent academically she is doing well religiously as well. Gunpreet won 1st prize in the age group 16 and above in speech competition held by Guru Nanak Academy in April 2004 in which more than 175 children of all age groups participated. She spoke on the importance of uncut hair. Gunpreet is Amrit Dhari girl. She partook Amrit along with her elder sister Kamneev and younger brother Sumel in the year 2000 at Dasmesh Darbar Gurudwara in Surrey.

Gunpreet comes from a family of high achievers which includes her father Dr. Kala Singh who is a community activist and regularly writes for this newspaper and her mother Kamaljit Kaur, M Phil, who was a teacher and vice principal at Khalsa School Vancouver and now a teacher with Vancouver School Board.
