SURREY – Sukhy Dhillon, a long time teacher, community activist, volunteer counselor, parent workshop presenter and social justice activist on a global scale, is taking a second run as school trustee for the Surrey Board of Education.

In the last election, Dhillon came 8th, short by just 2000 votes – so close!

Dhillon is the proud mother of three children, educated in the BC education system, who have gone on to become authors, medical doctors, public speakers, and project managers.

“Since kindergarten I instilled in my children the obligation of volunteer work,” says Dhillon.  Elementary school they were office monitors and library helpers. In high school they served on school councils, joined clubs and initiated various programs.

Dhillon herself has been a teacher volunteer since childhood. She fondly remembers, “ as soon as I learned how to read and write, I started teaching my grandmother and of course the other kids on the street.

Dhillon understands deeply the challenges faced by immigrant parents and children of immigrants.

“ I strongly believe that our public education system is excellent, but we need to get more parents engaged at the school level”

“The basic right to education is in our constitution,” she said
