Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be making his first visit to Canada later this year, according to Immigration Minister Chris Alexander, who met with Modi in Gandhinagar, India, on January 11. The two discussed the strong people-to-people ties and growing economic opportunities between Canada and India, agreed to explore new ways of working together to promote security and combat terrorism, and looked forward to Prime Minister Modi’s first official visit to Canada later in 2015. Minister Alexander was joined by the Dr. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Status of Women, Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Patrick Brown, Member of Parliament for Barrie, and Devinder Shory, Member of Parliament for Calgary Northeast. The meeting occurred on the margins of the Vibrant Gujurat conference, in which Canada was proud to participate for a third consecutive year.
