SURREY – Everyone likes a good deal. The Richmond RCMP would like to suggest that in some cases, the deal might not really be all that good.

There is a thriving industry selling stolen merchandise. Retail theft is perhaps the largest source of this underground industry. Criminals are working alone or in groups, with specific lists of products to steal akin to “shopping lists.” They utilize lookouts, counter-surveillance, and scout out their locations in advance looking for vulnerabilities.

You may be surprised at some of the most popular items that are being stolen:

•         Razor blades

•         Shampoo

•         Beauty creams

•         Toothbrushes

•         Batteries

•         Video games

•        Movies/videos (Blu-ray)

•         Bedding

•         Small kitchen appliances

Some of these products may be sold to rival retailers or openly through flea markets. However, many wind up being sold through places like Craigslist or Kijiji.

“There is an economy that buys and sells stolen merchandise,” says Corporal Dennis Hwang. “It is definitely not a victimless crime. We are trying to provide people with some extra knowledge in this area in order to help them make informed decisions. Be smart when shopping for items – especially if the seller has multiple items that are new and in original packaging without corresponding receipts. Conduct business in public areas like food courts or coffee shops. These areas are inclined at have video surveillance around to better protect both the buyer and seller. Lastly, ask lots of questions, be inquisitive.”
