Sikh Academy Hosts Lower Mainland East Regional Debate Tournament

SURREY – The Sikh Academy playedhost to the Lower Mainland EastRegional Debate Tournament onFebruary 1 with 30 teams from 8schools and over 150 participants. Theevent was hosted by debate coach andboard member Frankie Cena.Debaters from the region, consisting ofAbbotsford, Langley, North Delta, andSurrey, gathered to debate whether weas a society “have lost our right to privacy”as well as impromptu topics thatrequired on the spot preparation for achance to advance to the prestigiousBritish Columbia Provincial DebateChampionship- The Law FoundationCup to be held in Victoria on March 1,2014.After four gruelling rounds of debate,the scores of each team were tabulatedand the five senior teams, five juniorteams and one novice team who qualifiedto advance to the Provincial DebateChampionship were announced.Individual speaker awards were also presentedwithin each category for topranking speakers.Sikh Academy’s very own Navjot Singhwas the top ranked novice speaker,bringing great pride and joy to herschool. The Debate and SpeechAssociation of British Columbia(DSABC) is a non-profit, volunteer-ledorganization dedicated to teaching theskills of debate and speech in schools inBritish Columbia. Students can joinschool debate teams and then participatein tournaments hosted by membersof the DSABC, such as this regionaltournament.
