TransLink is taking the festival’s celebration across the city, with launch of a special bus.

For the first time, TransLink has wrapped a bus in vibrant art to celebrate Vaisakhi!

This art-wrapped bus made its debut during Vancouver’s Vaisakhi parade on April 15. You will find this bus running on the route of Surrey Nagar Kirtan on April 22.

Vaisakhi is one of the holiest days in the Sikh calendar as it marks the formation of the Order of the Khalsa more than 300 years ago. Vaisakhi’s also celebrated by people of Indian descent as a festival of harvest and renewal, as well as a time to meet friends and family, TransLink said.

As the Vaisakhi parade organizers plan for 700,000 attendees, the streets of Newton will be filled with people, so TransLink will be rerouting buses that normally run on the parade route.

Following Surrey bus routes will be rerouted:

  • 323 Surrey Central Station/Newton Exchange
  • 324 Surrey Central Station/Newton Exchange
  • 329 Surrey Central Station/Scottsdale

The parade will begin at approximately 9:30 AM at Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar Temple, located at 12885-85 Avenue, and will conclude there at approximately 4:00 PM.

Traffic controls will be in place beginning at 7:30 AM until approximately 5:00 PM, or until the RCMP deem the route is safe to be opened to vehicular traffic.  Access to 128th Street and road sections along the parade route will be impacted mostsignificantly.  Increased delays may be expected for travel through and within the area between 72nd Avenue to 88th Avenue, and Scott Road to King George Highway.

Participants are requested to cover their heads, and not to smoke or drink at the event.
