SURREY – The Indo-Canadian driver who mowed down a senior from his own community has been found guilty.
Gurjit Dhillon was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death for crashing his brother’s Corvette into a Surrey bus stop three years ago, killing a beloved 83-year-old grandfather Pritam Binning.
Dhillon initially faced one count of street racing in the Sept. 17, 2009 crash, but Crown prosecutors said conflicting evidence forced them to downgrade the charge.
Judge James Jardine, who delivered Dhillon’s verdict Friday in Surrey provincial court, said the 28-year-old took an intentional risk by accelerating quickly and changing lanes in a busy intersection before crashing, reported CTV news.
“This was a Corvette. It was flashy, it was loud, it was very quick,” Jardine said, adding that “the vehicle went out of control before brakes were applied.”
Investigators initially believed Dhillon was racing the black Corvette against a yellow Corvette prior to losing control of the vehicle, jumping a curb and crashing near 72nd Avenue and 127th Street. .
Victim Pritam Binning had his legs severed in the crash. He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries days later.
Binning’s grieving family has been critical of Dhillon, arguing he has failed to show real remorse for the accident.
Sentencing has been set for March next year.
