SURREY – The NDP, which has been surging in the polls, is looking to steal a seat in Surrey from the Conservatives with the nomination of a respected former RCMP Inspector.

Garry Begg will be the NDP candidate for Fleetwood-Port Kells against incumbent MP Nina Grewal after winning the party’s nomination Saturday afternoon.

Begg was an RCMP officer for more than 38 years before he made the switch to politics.

“I am so happy to have Garry Begg on the NDP team,” said NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. “He will be a great representative for Fleetwood-Port Kells and his experience with policing and his deep commitment to community safety will make him an excellent Member of Parliament.”

After winning the nomination Begg said “I am proud to be part of Tom Mulcair’s team, and I am looking forward to being part of the change that Canadians are looking for.”

Begg pledged to work for safer neighbourhoods, better transit, and more affordable housing.

“I have seen the impact of Conservative neglect on our community, and I want to be part of building positive solutions,” he said.
