AMRITSAR – Five youths were washed away this evening while they were taking a dip in the Beas on Baisakhi. The victims were identified as Palwinder Singh (18), Paramjit Singh (20), Kalu (21), Lovejit singh (18) and Harjit Singh (17).
The bodies of two — Palwinder Singh and Harjit Singh — were retrieved by divers and handed over to the family members. Efforts were on to recover the remaining bodies.
Superintendent of Police (Amritsar-Rural) Jasdeep Singh Saini said three victims belonged to Wazirbhullar village while the remaining two were from Baba Sawan Singh Nagar and Budha Theh villages.
He said eight youths had gone to bathe in the river. While five were swept away by the strong current, the three others — Gurtej Singh, Gurjant Singh and Jagjit Singh — were rescued by onlookers.
