CALGARY – Police have identified the man killed in a Calgary shooting over the weekend as 20-year-old Steven Sharda.

Officers were called to the 5300 block of Rundlehorn Drive N.E. around 3:45 a.m. on Saturday for reports of shots fired.

When they arrived, investigators discovered a vehicle with two people inside, both of whom had been shot.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene – while the other was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

On Tuesday, police confirmed Sharda of Calgary died as a result of gunshot wounds.

Police haven’t been able to interview the second victim, who remained in hospital with critical injuries as of Tuesday afternoon.

This incident is not thought to be random.

“We believe it was a targeted attack; that the people responsible knew the victim,” said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus during a Tuesday news conference. “We are in the process of collaborating witness evidence and reviewing CCT video to identify suspects.”

Andrus said police are also trying to determine a motive. Results of a forensic examination of the vehicle were not released.

“These investigations are very complex but there is no information to link this particular event with any other event that we’re investigating at the point,” said Duty Inspector Darren Leggatt. “These events are certainly more than just concerning, they’re very unsettling.”

Chelsea Belland heard the firing of shots early Saturday morning.

“I heard about four gunshots and I heard some tires,” said the Pineridge resident. “I didn’t want to come outside.”

Belland says her neighbourhood is filled with families and the incident was frighteningly close to her home.

“Too close for comfort. My baby’s just down the street.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.
