NEW DELHI – The Delhi Assemblyelections have given birth to anew political party called Aam AadmiParty (AAP) which gives a platformto the masses to opt for alternativepolitics. The impressive debut ofAAP shows that the aam aadmi (commonman) of India is now willing totrust Gen-X politics, reports NeerjaChowdhury for Economic Times.AAP chief, Arvind Kejriwal notonly defeated the strong hold ofthree term CM Shiela Dikshit in herown constituency, but his party wasjust less than BJP tally in terms ofpopular votes and seats. This is a rarefeat which he achieved in just oneyear, something that has never happenedin the last three decades. Thishardly one year old political party hasaccomplished this remarkable featfacing two Indian political biggieslike BJP and the Congress parties. It is evident from the assemblypolls results that the AAP vote hascut across different sections of societieswhere most of its candidateshave consistently won from middleclass colonies as well as from upperclass elites. The success of this novice partygoes beyond the simple count ofvotes and seats. The real significanceof its rise lies in the challenge thatit has put forward against the mostpowerful political outfits in thecountry. Anti-corruption movementbeing its root cause of coming intothe main political scenario, AAP hasturned this into a battle against thecorrupt political system. The partyput forward a systemic alternative bythe way of fundamental political decentralization. Not just this, the campaign ofAAP’s election highlights a featurefor financial and political transparency. For the first time in the historyof India, a political party collected“white money” for politics, madefull revelation of all forms of donationsreceived, and refused to takeany more donations once they metthe target that it had set. It also issuedmanifestos for every single constituencyand restored the culture ofdoor to door canvassing. The recordturnout in this assembly election andthe popular support for a new politicaloutfit indeed show a path for thebeginning of new political eras inIndia.
