NEW DELHI – Shiromani Akali Dal MP Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra asked the Narendra Modi government to inform the House about the status and findings of the Special Investigation team (SIT) set up to prosecute the accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

The MP raised the matter during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha. Chandumajra, the MP from Anandpur Sahib, said those guilty of the riots have not been punished despite being identified by various inquiry commissions, including the Justice GT Nanavati Commission.

He also asked the government to inform about the status of the promised additional Rs 5 lakh to be given to riot victims. Almost 3,000 people had died in Delhi in the riots which occurred in the aftermath of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

Yesterday, Chandumajra had raised the issue of Punjabis living in the US and Canada on ‘political asylum’. They were not issued Indian visas. Chandumajra said these people had gone to these countries due to economic reasons and used the ‘political asylum’ route to enter these countries.
