Alberta Premier Keen On Economic Ties With Punjab

AMRITSAR – Canada’s Alberta ProvincePremier Alison Redford has said that herstate is keen on strengthening economicties with India, particularly Punjab,through industry-to-industry linkages,knowledge sharing and increased tradeand investment.Addressing media-persons after payingobeisance at the Golden Temple here onTuesday, Redford said more than $102million worth of products and serviceswere being exported from Alberta toIndia every year. Alberta also had a largeSikh community that contributed to thedevelopment of Alberta, she said.Redford said two Memorandums ofUnderstanding (MoU) were signedbetween Alberta and Punjab on Mondayto enhance trade and investment activities.“Alberta has strong economic andcultural ties with Punjab and these agreementswill build on those ties andstrengthen our agriculture sectors. A keypart of our ‘Building Alberta Plan’ isopening new markets for the resources ofAlberta,” she said. Redford said Albertaand Punjab had previously signed MoUsin agriculture, animal husbandry and education.She further said that initially, aspects ofagriculture and animal genetics wereidentified to increase trade in dairy productionand swine genetics and anAgricultural Working Group (AWG) wasestablished to encourage communicationon projects of importance.On the sidelinesAfter paying obeisance at the GoldenTemple, Redford had langar and performedsewa, baking chapatis and servingfood to the devotees. The SGPC officialsalso felicitated her with a siropa anda picture of the Golden Temple.
