Shakiel Basra, who was on the run for three months, was wanted for Attempted Murder and Intentionally Discharging a Firearm in connection to a shooting in a residential neighbourhood in the Strawberry Hill area of Surrey, on the grounds of Strawberry Hill elementary school on September 15. “This arrest and capture is a continuation of our relentless efforts to remove these individuals from our streets and bring them before the courts,” says Superintendent Manny Mann, Investigative Services Officer.

SURREY – Surrey RCMP said Thursday they have nabbed a South Asian fugitive wanted in attempted murder charges and shooting up a Surrey house.

At approximately 3:00pm Thursday afternoon (December 17th), the Surrey RCMP High Risk Target Team, with assistance from the Surrey RCMP Strike Force Target Team, arrested Shakiel Basra without incident in the Chilliwack area.

Basra, who was on the run for three months, was wanted for Attempted Murder and Intentionally Discharging a Firearm in connection to a shooting in a residential neighbourhood in the Strawberry Hill on the grounds of Strawberry Hill elementary school in Surrey on September 15.

Basra remains in custody awaiting his first court appearance.

“This arrest and capture is a continuation of our relentless efforts to remove these individuals from our streets and bring them before the courts,” says Superintendent Manny Mann, Investigative Services Officer.

“I would like to thank our law enforcement partners and Crime Stoppers for their support, as well as the public and the media for their assistance.”

While on the run, the Delta resident Basra was allegedly involved in a kidnapping and extortion in Vancouver on Oct. 10.

He was charged with five counts in connection to the Vancouver incident.

Basra’s co-accused in both the Surrey and Vancouver attacks is Amarpreet Samra, who was taken into custody in October while Basra managed to evade authorities for another two months.

Mounties first identified Basra last April as being involved in the conflict that led to dozens of shootings between two gangs involved in low-level drug trafficking, reported Vancouver Sun.

He had refused to cooperate with police investigating the shootings.
