LABASA – Four Nadroga soccer players were admitted for a night at the Labasa Hospital after they suffered from food poisoning over the weekend.

This was confirmed yesterday by Health Ministry spokesman Peni Namotu who said medical test results revealed the group contracted food poisoning from eating canned fish curry.

“They arrived at the Labasa Hospital’s Emergency Room after 8pm where they were attended to by our health staff. They are now fit and have been released,” he said.

The incident has sparked warning from the ministry for the public to take extra care and be more vigilant when buying food items from supermarkets.

“We are reiterating the need to check the expiry dates of food items before buying them as most of us are fond of rushing when we do our shopping,” Namotu said.

“Don’t overlook the labels and remember to check and read the instructions carefully.”

Yesterday, Nadroga assistant coach Waisea Tale (Senior), who was discharged from hospital, said they were taken in for medical treatment on Saturday night after experiencing unbearable pain and fever.

He said some of the players had initially experienced headache and fever before their Fiji Sun/ GP Battery National League match against Labasa at Subrail Park.

“One of the players vomited before the match and another one fell to the ground while playing and was forced to get off the field,” Tale said.
