Attorney General Suzanne Anton says licence suspensions and vehicle impoundments are possible for distracted drivers.

VANCOUVER – Attorney General Suzanne Anton says licence suspensions and vehicle impoundments are possible for distracted drivers who are repeat offenders of texting and driving.

“I think that $1000 is a subsequent offence. It does strike me as rather high. What we need to do in the analysis we will undertake when we get this response back, we need to change people’s behaviours,” said Anton, wondering aloud about what the government is looking at in terms of fine.

Anton is making these comments as the public consultation over distracted driving continues.

“What we are looking for is the optimum balance of penalties and sanctions so that people will stop being on their electronic devices and concentrate on driving,” says Anton.

While Anton says licence suspensions and vehicle impoundments remain on the table, she repeated the message she shared with our station last week that seizing cell phones isn’t being considered, reported News 1130.

You have until July 16 to participate in the public consultation.
