NADI – Only a day after losing their mother in a car accident, members of a family were also mourning the death of their father Tuesday.

Mohammed Khan, 74, died at the Nadi Hospital from injuries he suffered, hours after his wife died instantly in the accident at Votualevu, Nadi, on Tuesday.

Rahina Khan, 64, his wife, was driving him to hospital when the accident happened. Their children, who reside overseas, were too distraught to speak to the media yesterday.

Police said Mrs Khan was driving her husband to the Nadi Hospital when the vehicle she was driving collided with an oncoming van.

Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said he was uncertain of the health issue Mr Khan was facing.

“We are very saddened by this tragedy and we caution drivers to take extra precaution at all times,” said Insp Sokomuri.

Timoci Vunivalu, who was first at the scene, when he heard a loud crash from the impact of the collision. “I was having my lunch when I heard this big bang and I ran out immediately,” he said.

“I saw the vehicles and the elderly woman stuck in the front seat. Her husband was the first one I could reach because the wife was in a really bad position and there was blood all over the place,” said Mr Vunivalu.

The young man, with the assistance of neighbour Ratu Jo, lifted Mr Khan out of the vehicle and returned for his wife.

“The door was stuck and we could not get to her. She was bleeding heavily and we could not do anything. Then the National Fire Authority arrived, the police and the ambulance, but it was too late for her,” he said.
