OTTAWA— Liberal Human Resources and Skills Development and Labour critic Rodger Cuzner said Conservative government’s decision to bring forward back-to-work legislation and intervene in the labour dispute at Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) is another example of Stephen Harper’s government’s continued trampling of workers’ rights.

“Continuing their tradition of disrespect for workers and collective bargaining, the Conservative government is meddling once again in the labour dispute of an independent company. CP and its workers were progressing towards a resolution until this government voiced its intent to legislate CP’s employees back to work, undermining their influence at the bargaining table.

This is just the latest example in the Conservative government’s ongoing war against collective bargaining, which has seen them legislate lower wages for Canadian postal workers and intervene in four of five labour negotiations with Air Canada. While the Harper Conservatives continue their ideological battle, they ignore those Canadians who drive our economy every day, and who are concerned about the financial security and pensions for which they have worked so hard.”
