SUVA – A total of 1899 homes sustained major damage in the Western Division when Tropical Cyclone Evan hit the region in December last year. Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki said the confirmed figure included homes that were completely or partially damaged during the cyclone.

“We are now into the last phase of rehabilitation of Tropical Cyclone Evan,” Cdr Cawaki said. “We are into the last phase of the work that we need to do in terms of bringing about normalcy for the people of the Western Division.

“After assessments made by our Fiji Military Forces and Department of Works engineers, we found that a total of 829 homes were completely damaged. “This means that 829 homes will be completely rebuilt for those who were left homeless during the cyclone,” he said.

Cdr Cawaki said $12,800 would be spent for materials and rebuilding a single house.

According to the Commissioner Western’s office, Rakiraki had a total of 315 homes damaged, Tavua — 314, Ba — 254, Nadi — 110, Nadroga and Navosa — 185, Yasawa — 404 and Lautoka — 257.
