NEWTON – Stars of the new Canadian comedy Dr. Cabbie made an appearance at Cineplex Odeon Strawberry Hill Cinemas in Surrey for their film’s premiere Thursday night.

Starring Toronto actor-writer Vinay Virmani, the laugh-riot comedy is partly backed by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, and featuring his ex-GF Katrina Kaif’s sister Isabelle Kaif as well Hollywood star Kunal Nayyar of Big Bang Theory along with Canadian actress Adrianne Pallicki.

Vinay Virmani, who’s rich dad Ajay Virmani also backed the film along with funding from Telefilm Canada, stars as a newly arrived medical doctor from India who gets the run-around in Canada and not allowed to practise medicine here with an Indian MBBS and he decides to drive a cab and open a kind of mobile hospital in the back of the cab.

Despite the glaring holes in the plot and the general credibility leap comedies take with real-life issues, Dr. Cabbie is a rocking, raunchy comedy that will tickle your funny bone and pull at your heart strings.

Not for Desis who are easily offended by the type of humour much liked in films like Harold and Kumar, but for the new generation of all ethnicities, this film hits the right notes for a broad comedy that pushes the envelope.

Kunal Nayyar of Big Bang Theory shines in a flashy comic but thoroughly lovable role and Vinay Virmani also bounces back from the terrible Breakaway thanks to a tight script and good direction by a French Canadian director Jean-Francois Pouliot.

This is the film that South Asian cinema in Canada needs to go towards after the boring films of Deepa Mehta!!!
