India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas in Richmond is a very busy and popular place of worship. Every week a number of functions by devotees are very well attended. Same was the case last week when Bhangu and Sandhu families celebrated the engagement of Maninderpal Singh Bhangu and Amanat Kaur Sandhu at the #5 Road Gurdwara. They began the process with an Akhand Paath Sahib on Thursday, January 23. Over the next three days both families served the sangat with dedication and respect. On Saturday, after the Bhog of Akhand Paath Sahib, the engagement ceremony got under way. When it came to blessing of the couple, Maninderpal Singh and Amanat  Kaur requested their relatives, friends and well-wishers that rather than giving money to them as Sagan, they should place it in one or both of the boxes placed for that purpose in the Gurdwara lobby next to their chairs. These boxes were for BC Cancer Society and a Ludhiana based charity called:‘Manukhta Di Seva Sabh to Vaddi Seva’ (Service to humanity is the greatest service). This was a very nice gesture on the part of both Bhangu and Sandhu families as well as Maninderpal Singh Bhangu and Amanat Kaur Sandhu. They must be congratulated for this act of generosity. Hopefully, it will serve as an example for other young people in our community to consider gestures like this. On behalf of the Gurdwara Management Committee President Balbir Jawanda and Secretary Balwant Sanghera thanked and congratulated both families and the young couple.
