Bollywood actress Sridevi’s comebackfilm ” English Vinglish”, whichreleased last week, is silently spreading amessage among its viewers worldwide -respect women.The 49-year-old plays the characterof a middle class housewife Shashi whois often ridiculed and humiliated by herteenage daughter and husband becauseof her poor English.
Sridevi said she is getting positivefeedback from her viewers who haveliked the film’s message of supportingand respecting women who silently dedicatetheir lives to the welfare of theirfamily.”A man, someone’s husband, cameup to me and said after watching themovie he had felt bad that his harshremarks may have hurt his wife manytimes.
“A young girl had said she wentback home after watching the movieand hugged her mother and said ‘I loveyou’. These were the reactions, emotionsof some viewers. The movie is notjust about a person learning Englishlanguage, it is about human feelings, it isa universal subject,” Sridevi said duringpromoting her film.
The actress, who has ruled theHindi film industry in the late ’80s andnineties, is all praises for first timedirector Gauri Shinde, wife of directorR Balki. “Gauri is a great director, and itis a first time for meto work with awoman director. I just grabbed thescript when I heard it.””I fell for the character of ShashiGodbole.
Shashi embodied simplicityand sensitivity. She is a very relatablecharacter because I am a mother and awoman. But my children and husbandrespect and pamper me,” she said.Looking chic in black tight fittedtrousers, shirt and an ankle length openrobe in black and gold, she credited herhusband Boney Kapoor and children asthe secret behind her youthful looks.
“My husband and children keep me inshape, no pain no gain,” she added.Sridevi, who has returned to the silverscreen after a gap of fifteen yearswith this film, said she will also makeher daughters watch it. “This is a movieI can show proudly to my kids andgrandchildren, this is also one of mybest,” she added.
