Stephen Lee Schienbein, 50, has been arrested from the Surrey area where he resides following a violent October sex assault.

VANCOUVER – A Surrey man has been arrested and charged in the violent attack on a woman who thought she was getting into a cab in Gastown.

Police are giving credit to a tipster for the break in the case.

It’s led to the arrest of 50-year old Stephen Lee Schienbein of Surrey, reported News 1130.

A 25-year old woman had climbed into what she thought was a taxi last month, but Deputy Chief Adam Palmer says she was instead driven to East Vancouver, severely beaten and sexually assaulted.

“Very traumatic situation for this victim, very difficult situation, I think, for anybody to deal with. She’s coping with it, but very difficult.”

Palmer says someone came forward after police released video footage captured by a closed-circuit camera.

“A witness observed a minivan similar to the one described by the victim, driven by a man matching the suspect description. This witness was able to note the license plate number and forwarded it to our police.”

Along with the arrest, police say they’ve seized a minivan.

Schienbein has been charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, and assault.
