India’s Air Travel Market Up 18.6% In Jan-Aug

NEW DELHI – Domestic passenger air traffic in India registered a growth of 18.6% during the period January to August this year over the same period last year. Domestic airlines carried 396.3 lakh passengers in the first eight months of 2011 as compared to 334.1 lakh during the corresponding period last year.

Jet Airways along with its subsidiary JetLite continued to lead the pack with a market share of 26.3% in August followed by Kingfisher (18.8%) and IndiGo (18.7%). State-owned Air India had a market share of 17.4% followed by SpiceJet with 13.4% and GoAir 5.3%.

The month of August witnessed a significant decrease in seat factor as compared to previous months primarily due to peak season end and monsoon.
