ROHTAK – A national-level kabaddi player, Sukhwinder Singh (23), was shot dead by two scooter-borne assailants at Rithal village in Rohtak district last evening. The incident, including the arrival of the assailants, firing of shots from a pistol and their escape, was captured on a CCTV camera installed at a house near the crime spot.

The footage shows Sukhwinder speaking to someone on his mobile phone as the two unidentified assailants approach him and fire shots in his chest and forehead.

Sukhwinder was rushed to the local PGIMS where he was declared ‘brought dead’. The body was handed over to family members today after a post-mortem examination.

Sukhwinder’s father Chander Singh, an ex-serviceman, said his son was returning home after routine sports practice when he was killed.

He said neither his son nor any other family member had enmity with anybody. The family members met Haryana Director General of Police Yashpal Singhal, who was here for a meeting.

“The DGP told us to meet him again within a month in case there was no progress in the case,” Sukhwinder’s uncle Vijender Narwal told The Tribune. Vijender, however, alleged they had no faith in the functioning of the police, and that the matter should be investigated by an independent agency.

He cited an incident of alleged police highhandedness when the CIA staff had picked up Sukhwinder a few months ago on suspicion of his involvement in a murder case.

“They kept him in illegal custody for several days and when he was released, he could barely walk. We along with village panchayat members approached the Rohtak IGP and SP and demanded action against the police officials concerned, but to no avail,” he said.

Investigation officer SI Shamsher Singh said the CCTV footage was being examined.
