PATIALA – A seminar on “Komagata Maru: Context, Significance and Legacy” was organised by Punjabi University. The seminar was sponsored by the Union Ministry of Culture to mark the centenary celebrations of the historical event.

Taking part in a discussion, experts expressed concern over how historians and the Union Government had “failed” to acknowledge the contribution of the Komagata Maru martyrs who laid their lives for the country.

Scholar Dr Harish K. Puri said the incident had been generally viewed as a case of racial discrimination and exclusion of Indians by the Canadian government.

But people ignored the fact that the incident was a “deliberate attempt of the British to exclude Indians from Canada because of their imperial interests”, he said.
