LONDON – An Indo-British man in Britain wasjailed for life for murderinghis school friend to claim319,000 pounds in life insurancehe had taken out in thedefendant’s name.Jagdev Singh Rai, 44, wasimprisoned for life last weekfor luring Jasbir Singh Bainsto Dartmouth Park of WestBromwich in the West Midlandsin the middle of thenight, where he slit his throatand flung his body into thewater, the Mirror reported onSunday.Bains was found floatingNovember 28 in 2012 by apasserby.Wolverhampton CrownCourt heard that the killer, whois also known as Jamie Rai, plottedto execute the 41-year-oldvictim after stealing his identityfor an insurance payout.He took out the life insurancepolicy worth 319,000pounds later.Phone records showed thatRai invited Bains to the park onthe night of his death.A jury also heard how aCCTV camera outside Rai’shome on Salisbury Road, whichusually remained in a static position,changed angles on thenight of the murder – somethingthat could not have beena coincidence.Bains was homeless andstruggling with drink and drugsat the time of his death.Rai was also jailed for 18months for negligent driving in2011.He targeted his friend justafter completing the 18-monthsentence in Scotland.Raju Gurbaksh Singh, 28,died after being hit by Rai inScotland July 27, 2010.Rai was last week sentencedto life, with a minimum of 27years imprisonment, with a furtherfour-and-half years sentenceto run concurrently forthree fraud offences.
