Indo-British Man To Face Trial For Murdering Fellow Sikh

LONDON – An Indo-Brit- Centresish man accused of the murderof a British Sikh during a streetclash over 17 years ago will go ontrial later this year.Kiranjit Uppal, 36, was arrestedat Heathrow Airport as hearrived on a plane from India inSeptember last year.Uppal is accused of killingHarminder Singh Jhaghra duringa street altercation in Hayes,south-west London, in February1996. He denied the murdercharge and causing grievousbodily harm when he allegedlystabbed Jhaghra in the arm. Uppalis due to stand trial at the OldBailey court in London in Septemberthis year.The 28-year-old victim hadsuffered a stab wound to the armbut managed to flag down a passingmotorist to take him to safetyat a nearby petrol station.He was then taken to hospitalby ambulance but was pronounceddead. A post-mortemfound the knife had severed anartery in his arm.Detectives arrested severalpeople in connection with the incidentbut all others were releasedwith no further action.
