WINNIPEG – An Indo-Canadian man accused of a hit and run that killed a woman in Winnipeg is going to jail for a year.

Roop Singh Dhalliwal, 38, was sentenced Wednesday for fleeing the scene of a crash that killed 19-year-old Melissa Ranville in August 2009.

She was struck while walking on Sheppard Street, between Church Avenue and Inkster Boulevard. Dhalliwal was suspended from driving at the time.

Justice Joan McKelvey on Wednesday called Dhalliwal “cowardly” for failing to stop.

She also handed Dhalliwal a sentence of six months for driving while disqualified. That will be served concurrent to the one-year term.

As well, Dhalliwal is suspended from driving for three years.

Ranville’s mom, Janet Delorme, said the sentence isn’t long enough and brings little closure.

“I don’t even know how it’s going to end, when it’s going to end,” she said.

“It’s just so hard. Everyday doesn’t seem to get any better anymore. All I can do is take it one day at a time.”
