Inquest To Be Held Into Indo-Canadian Man Who Died In Police Custody

Surinder Singh Mahli was transported to hospital on Dec. 26,2011, after he was found unresponsive in an RCMP lockup cell inSurrey.

VANCOUVER — The BCCoroners Service hasannounced that a public inquestwill be held into the death ofSurinder Singh Mahli.The inquest will take place fromJan. 20 through 24, 2014, at theCoroners Court in Burnaby.Mahli, 58, had been taken tohospital on Dec. 26, 2011, afterbeing found unresponsive in thecells at the Surrey RCMP lockup.Mahli died four days later onDec. 30, 2011 at SurreyMemorial Hospital.Malhi had been arrested on Dec.23 for breaching a court orderand was taken to the SurreyRCMP lockup, where he wasbooked in.Presiding coroner MargaretJanzen and a jury will hear evidencefrom subpoenaed witnessesto determine the factssurrounding this death.While the jury may not, by law,make any findings of legalresponsibility, it will have theopportunity to make recomme n d a t i o n saimed at preventingdeathsunder similarcircumstancesin the future.An inquest is aformal processthat allows forpublic presentationof evidencerelatingto a death.
